Whitby is a port particularly supporting fleets of herring boats, and there are also jet and alum mines, which were a mainstay in Victorian times. Whitby is also a good location from which to explore Yorkshire's Heritage Coastline and the North Yorkshire moors. The action of the horror novel 'Dracula' is partially located in Whitby, which is an added attraction to fans of the genre. The cost of living in Whitby is cheaper than much of the country, with house prices approximately three-quarters less than similarly sized properties in London.
