Whitby Overview

Whitby is a small seaside town in North Yorkshire. It is a popular holiday resort and has been attracting tourists since the Georgian period. Whitby is a port particularly supporting fleets of herring boats, and there are also jet and alum mines, which were a mainstay in Victorian times. Whitby is also a good location from which to explore Yorkshire's Heritage Coastline and the North Yorkshire moors. The action of the horror novel 'Dracula' is partially located in Whitby, which is an added attraction to fans of the genre. The cost of living in Whitby is cheaper than much of the country, with house prices approximately three-quarters less than similarly sized properties in London.

Whitby Job Opportunities

Whitby has a tourism and hospitality industry, with many hotels, B&Bs and guest houses, so there are many hospitality jobs. The retail sector is also strong in the area, with large chains advertising for sales positions, particularly over the festive period. As a small town with a population of approximately 14,000, there are plenty of job opportunities in Whitby for care work, cleaners, taxi drivers, school staff, accountants, and work in the catering industry, particularly chefs and general kitchen staff, as there are many pubs, cafes and restaurants.

There is a well-regarded fishing industry training school in Whitby and there are certainly opportunities for trawlermen, marine engineers and other jobs related to that sector.

Whitby Employment Trends

Whitby employment trends are slightly lower than the national average, but the future of the town looks bright, especially if the plans for the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, located off shore to Whitby, go ahead. The logistics required for the project could create hundreds of Whitby jobs in the area.
