Situated on the south coast of England, Southampton is the largest city in the county of Hampshire. The cost of living is average for the south, with areas of affordable housing and some luxury developments. The city was named the sixth best place to live and work in the UK according to The 2015 Good Growth for Cities Index, thanks mostly to the availability of jobs and the growing economy. A thriving arts and culture scene also makes Southampton a pleasant place to live. There are good road and rail links to Portsmouth, Winchester, and London, as well as access to Europe and the Isle of Wight by ferry.

Southampton Job Opportunities

Southampton is a port city, and there is still a great deal of employment to be found in the maritime sector. Boat building offers engineering and manufacturing jobs in Southampton, and the busy docks also provide operations and logistics jobs in Southampton. As well as freight, passenger services operate out of the port, and the city is a useful base for employees working on one of the cruise lines. Southampton Airport serves the UK and Europe, offering a variety of roles including customer service jobs in Southampton. The large Westquay shopping centre is a major employer in the retail sector, and there are also high-street shops and restaurants offering sales and catering jobs. Two universities provide academic posts.

Southampton Employment Trends

In late 2016, The Business Magazine named Southampton as one of the top ten places in the UK for economic growth. The city is the South Coast's centre for retail, and the port is seen as the cruise capital of northern Europe. The sea has always been an important part of Southampton's economy, and remains so. Today, car imports and exports are a key area, alongside the cruise trade. Recent years have seen a rise in the number of industrial estates around Southampton, providing skilled and unskilled roles. Research, environmental, and medical jobs are also on the increase, as more scientific institutions are set up in Southampton.
