Sheerness Overview

Sheerness is the largest town on the Isle of Sheppey, in the Medway region of Northern Kent. Formerly a fort, then a naval dockyard, it has played an important part in the UK's maritime history. Today, Sheerness is a centre for sea transportation as well as industry and leisure, with the seafront, beach, and coastal park attracting visitors. The A249 runs from Sheerness to Maidstone, connecting Sheppey to the mainland and putting the M2 and M20 motorways within reach. A network of bus services covers the island, with routes to destinations in Kent. A rail link with Sittingbourne connects to London Victoria and Dover services. The cost of living is low in comparison with other parts of the South East. Open spaces and sea views make Sheerness an attractive prospect for home buyers seeking a little more room, especially as the number of available Sheerness jobs is plentiful.

Sheerness Job Opportunities

The Port of Sheerness is an important part of the local economy. It is one of the main points of entry for imported cars, and it also handles produce. The port provides jobs in Sheerness across a number of sectors, including transportation and logistics, construction jobs, engineering jobs, and administration jobs. In addition, the port area is a popular location for industrial and manufacturing firms. Tourism and leisure are also important employers in and around Sheerness, with a golf course, a leisure centre, and town centre shops, as well as holiday accommodation, such as caravan parks.

Sheerness Employment Trends

The Isle of Sheppey is an easy day or weekend trip from London or Maidstone, making it increasingly desirable for getaways. The leisure sector, including property sales and management, is likely to see expansion. A wind farm at the Port of Sheerness began construction in the summer of 2015, creating employment opportunities. It is hoped that expansion and development of the port area will create 1,250 jobs in Sheerness and the surrounding area over the next 20 years.
