The Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust is investing in St Michael’s Hospital to build on the already excellent patient outcomes to provide a venue for all elective orthopaedic surgery patients in Cornwall.

The hospital is 20 minutes away from the main Royal Cornwall Hospital site in Truro where the emergency trauma service is situated. It is 5 minutes from the 3 mile long Hayle beach and the South West Coastal path.

The St. Michael’s Hospital teams have for many years performed orthopaedic surgery; Historically the range of operations and the complexity of the patients able to be dealt with has been restricted by a lack of higher care facilities and side rooms for patients with infections. These facilities are now fully up and running with a 4 bedded higher care bay and a 3 bedded isolation Bay situated on St Joseph’s Ward.

The vision is to invest significantly into St Michaels Hospital to allow all required planned orthopaedic operations to be undertaken at St Michaels Hospital for all level of anaesthetic requirements. This will require enhanced pre-operative, perioperative and post-operative nursing and therapies with improvements and improvements have been made to the physical structure of the hospital and to the equipment available to accommodate such procedures.. We provide an immediate post-operative higher care area for 24 hours which is staffed by perioperative care staff. These staff have been through an in-house training programme which has enhanced their competences and has now become business as usual.

We will be the only elective orthopaedic hospital in the South West of England and are looking for keen enthusiastic staff to help progress our goals. We are already able to provide the most contemporary orthopaedic interventions, including arthroscopic, joint replacement and revision surgery to all joints and long bones.

The entire team are very excited about these changes and look forward to welcoming additional team members to make it happen.

This is a full time post working 37.5 hours per week and the successful candidate will be flexible and adaptable with excellent communication and organisational skills and most importantly, have unlimited enthusiasm. A good level of knowledge in Orthopaedic surgery would be desirable.

Outpatient Booking Clerk - Penzance

We are looking to appoint a cheerful and motivated person to work within the busy Outpatient Booking Centre at West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance.

The Outpatient Booking Centre provides a focal point for outpatient appointments across the Trust and is responsible for booking both new and follow up outpatient appointments. It is a very busy and demanding area to work. The offices are open between 8am and 5pm.

The Booking Clerk will be responsible for delivering an excellent customer service to patients. You will need to be able to work in a calm, logical and methodical way but be able to multi-task whilst dealing with frequent interruptions, and you must possess effective communication skills whilst always maintaining patient confidentiality. You must be confident, diplomatic and able to work in a busy environment with a pleasant and caring disposition. You will be required to have a good level of education and have some experience and knowledge of the NHS and ideally experienced in the use of the Outpatient Module of the Patient Administration System, E-Referrals and Microsoft Word. Full training will be given on IT systems.

You will be joining a highly dedicated administrative team that supports patient care.

This is a full time 37.5 hours per week permanent post.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Ensuring our clients are cared for with respect and love and that their dignity is maintained.

Ensuring each client is assessed, their needs are clearly understood, there is documented evidence of a reliable care plan and this plan is reviewed regularly.

Collaborating with colleagues and a range of multi-professionals, assure the holistic care of our clients.

Providing support, education and emotional care to the relatives and friends of the clients.

Providing supervision and structured support to more junior members of staff within the multi-disciplinary team. Contributing to nursing services in a professional and caring manner
