Preston Overview

The City of Preston, Lancashire, formerly the Borough of Preston and the surrounding urban settlement (also called Preston) is a former boomtown of the textile industry. The people of Preston have been producing wool since the early 13th century. However, the business of textile manufacturing in Preston has declined since the mid-19th century and the area has replaced manufacturing jobs with jobs in other sectors like finance, telecommunications and engineering.

Preston is one of the largest non-metropolitan districts in the UK, so you're sure to find a job that suits you without having to feel like you live in a cramped urban district.

Preston Job Opportunities

Jobs in Preston fall into a variety of industries. James Hall and Co., a haulage and produce supplier, owns the largest building in the city and provides management training and placement programmes to get trainees jobs at local SPAR stores.

If you're looking for legal or administrative jobs in Preston, there are many law firms, consultancies and insurance companies hiring people with the proper expertise. There are also jobs at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) for educators and administrators. For more hands-on labour, you can work at the docks, loading freight for Freightlink Solutions. Preston is an important hub for transportation and shipping to various parts of the country and overseas.

Preston Employment Trends

Preston ranks third in unemployment in Lancashire, after Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen. However, unemployment there has been steadily decreasing. Between October 2013 and October 2014, unemployment claimants dropped from 2,971 to 1,759, a decrease of over 40 per cent.

The city has undergone a lot of urban development as part of the Preston Rebirth project. This will no doubt pave the way for more jobs in the retail and service sectors in the near future.
