Portsmouth Overview

Portsmouth, or Pompey as the locals call it, is the UK's only island city. However, its geographical isolation seems to be part of its appeal. It's the only UK city with a denser population than London! Residents love browsing for bric-a-brac along Albert Road, walking their dogs along the beach at Eastney, and tucking in to fresh local seafood from the fish market.

Rent and property prices in Portsmouth are similar to those found in nearby coastal Southampton. Groceries in Portsmouth are 15% above average, but if you love eating out, you'll be thrilled to find that restaurant meals are over 20% cheaper.

Portsmouth Job Opportunities

The public administration, education and health industries are the largest employers in Portsmouth, with employees in these sectors making up roughly one-third of the local workforce. Many of the jobs in Portsmouth are at the university, college and Queen Alexandra Hospital. As home to one of the UK's three Royal Navy bases, Portsmouth also has a large defence sector, and many officers and other naval workers find themselves taking jobs in Portsmouth.

Its seaside locale also makes it a popular choice for holidaymakers. Portsmouth jobs in tourism and hospitality are plentiful, especially during the peak summer periods. The city is also developing a reputation as a key advanced engineering and high-tech manufacturing hub. High-profile companies like BAE Systems, IBM, the Pall Corporation and Airbus Defence and Space all provide a range of jobs in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Employment Trends

With job growth of more than 9% over the last decade, Portsmouth is placed amongst the top 10 cities in the UK for economic development. This is particularly impressive considering that this period included the global financial crisis.

The local council is spearheading initiatives to accelerate job growth in the advanced engineering sector, high-tech manufacturing industries and other public and private business areas. These programs should see further job increases in the area.
