Liskeard Overview

Liskeard is an ancient market town in Cornwall, at the head of the Looe valley; its former status as a stannary town, where locally mined tin was sold, accounts for the unusual number of distinguished buildings in the town centre. The town has a population of over 9,000, and enjoys good transport links to other towns in Cornwall and the rest of the UK. It lies on the Penzance to London main railway line, and it’s linked to Plymouth and the motorway network by the A38. Liskeard is pleasantly situated with Bodmin Moor to the north and Looe, on the south coast, just 9 miles away.

Liskeard Job Opportunities

Liskeard’s town centre has a number of independent traders supplying locally sourced food, including cakes and freshly caught fish, and is also home to four national supermarkets that provide jobs in the retail sector. A community hospital, several homecare providers, and residential and nursing homes offer employment opportunities such as nursing jobs, social worker jobs, and other healthcare jobs. The leisure and tourism industry provides employment opportunities in restaurants, hotels and guest houses, as well as at the nearby watersports centre and adventure activity centre. There are several industrial estates in the town that are a good place to look for sales jobs, as well as employment in kitchen fitting and construction. The town has a large community college, two primary schools and several pre-school settings that offer jobs in Liskeard for teaching and administrative staff.

Liskeard Employment Trends

According to figures from the Department for Work and Pensions, unemployment rates are 2.3 percent, much lower than the national average of 3.3 percent, suggesting that the jobs Liskeard has to offer are very lucrative. Recent studies show that accommodation and food provision is an important source of jobs in Liskeard, as are retail, construction and education. A higher-than-average ratio of retired people live in the town, so health and social care providers and the service sector are forecast to grow.
