Lewisham Overview

Lewisham is a major hub for rail and bus routes throughout southeast and central London, and out to Kent. The Docklands Light Railway provides a route to Canary Wharf or London stations. By road, the A2 is a major artery from London to Dover, linking to the M25 and M2 motorways and the Dartford Crossing. The borough has been held by Labour for many years, and the cost of living is low in comparison to nearby Greenwich.

For south Londoners, the large shopping centre makes it an alternative retail destination to the central London shops or out of town malls like Bluewater and Lakeside. A long term regeneration project is set to improve Lewisham's facilities.

Lewisham Job Opportunities

Lewisham jobs cover a range of industries. University Hospital Lewisham is a major employer offering healthcare jobs such as clerical and catering staff as well as health workers. Both University College London and Goldsmiths have campuses in the area, providing opportunities in education and support services. Transport for London offers jobs for drivers and other staff at the bus and rail stations.

There are several large supermarkets and retail parks, as well as major chains and smaller boutiques in the shopping centre and the high street, which creates retail job opportunities. The market with its stalls is a permanent fixture. Restaurants, pubs and cafes offer catering opportunities.

Lewisham Employment Trends

Lewisham is becoming a more popular place to live thanks to its still affordable housing coupled with good transport links and proximity to fashionable Greenwich and Blackheath. As the town centre becomes a destination for shopping and dining, fresh opportunities in retail and catering are appearing.

The Crossrail overground route from the west of London to the east, scheduled to open in 2019, is likely to bring job opportunities to the area, as well as making travel easier, increasing the desirability of Lewisham as a place to live and work.
