Gosport Overview

Gosport is located on the South Coast of England, in the county of Hampshire. The town of Gosport is situated opposite the city of Portsmouth, separated by Portsmouth Port. It originally started out as accommodation for those working in the Royal Navy. According to Gosport City Council most workers commute out of Gosport for work - approximately 18,200 people.

Of the 80,000 residents in Gosport 35,000 are in full time employment. Most workers living in Gosport are manual skilled labourers. Gosport living costs are on an average baseline when compared to other Southern counties. When compared to nearer cities such as Fareham and Southampton, Gosport is cheaper for housing and council tax costs.

Gosport Job Opportunities

There are a number of different business sectors within the Gosport area. The main industries are marine, retail and light manufacturing. A number of employers hiring people living within the Gosport area are located in the Newgate Lane or Segensworth area. The main employers are the Office for National Statistics, Eaton Aerospace Limited and Gosport Council. The Royal Navy also maintains a presence in Gosport. It has the HMS Sultan training establishment in Gosport which has 3,000 people in training and is one of the bigger employers in the area. There is also an increasing number of retail jobs within Gosport, especially with the area beginning to undergo a series of re-developments.

Gosport Employment Trends

Figures from a 2001 census revealed that Gosport's overall full-time employment rate was 46.7%, with the majority of the remaining residents in either part-time work or self-employed. Unemployment was around 2.7%. The city is primarily used as a commuter town, with more than double the number of people commuting out of the town each day than in according to the Gosport Borough Council, and this trend has increased in recent years.
