Farnham Overview

Farnham is a market town in Surrey's Wey Valley, close to the border with Hampshire. Characterised by picturesque streets and houses, it is a popular destination for shoppers and tourists.

The A31 runs through the town, connecting it with Guildford to the east and Winchester to the west. The A3 to Portsmouth and the M3 motorway run close by, and the M25 is easily reached. The rail service to London Waterloo takes around an hour, and there are also trains to Alton and Guildford.

Housing prices and rents are on the low side for the south east, with historic cottages on the market as well as more modern homes. Three and four bedroom properties are readily available, making this a desirable area for families, and home ownership is high compared with the national average.

Farnham Job Opportunities

There are plenty of retail jobs in Farnham, with both chain and independent shops in the town centre. Pubs, cafes and restaurants offer employment in the catering sector. Tourism is another important lifeline, with Farnham Castle and the Birdworld wildlife park attracting visitors.

Business parks on the outskirts of Farnham provide a home for larger organisations, with sales jobs, finance jobs, and IT jobs, amongst other areas. Technology and pharmaceutical firms offer roles in manufacturing and engineering. Some of Farnham's workers commute elsewhere, often to Guildford or even London. BAE Systems, at nearby Farnborough, is a major employer in the area.

Farnham Employment Trends

As more firms move further from London, more office and industrial jobs in Farnham are expected to emerge. The town's ageing population is likely to lead to increased opportunities in the health and care sectors. Unemployment rates in Farnham are low, making this prosperous, self-contained town a good prospect for living and working in.
