Although historically, Exmouth has catered to the family-oriented holiday makers from Exeter and the surrounding area, today the seaside resort's two miles of sandy beach, seafront promenade, and nature reserve, are a magnet for those wishing to retire in an environment of outstanding natural beauty. The driving force behind jobs in Exmouth traditionally reflected the summer tourist trade. More recently, an increasing number of jobs in Exmouth are tied into servicing the growing retired community. Indeed, 30% of East Devon's population is over the age of 65. Another expanding community in Exmouth are commuters who take advantage of the 20-minute rail ride to Exeter.

Exmouth Location Employment Trends

A variety of construction jobs in Exmouth will become available as the town continues to improve its tourist attractions. The East Devon District Council has announced a £18m development project starting in fall 2015 in order to upgrade the facilities on the seafront. The project is estimated to create 175 full-time jobs in Exmouth and inject £4m a year into the local economy. Overall, the economic forecast for Exmouth is positive. The area is expected to attain higher rates in employment and real value added than the regional and national levels.
