The town of Ebbw Vale lies at the head of the Ebbw Fawr river valley in South Wales. Together with nearby Brynmawr, the local population numbers approximately 33,000. The area enjoys good transport connections via the A465 and hourly trains to Cardiff. The cost of living in Ebbw Vale is generally lower than affluent areas of the Welsh coast. According to a report published by Wales Online, average house prices in the Blaenau Gwent area were recorded as having fallen to their lowest in England and Wales during 2014, set against a backdrop of modest rises elsewhere. Demand for travel to and from Ebbw Vale was under-estimated by the promoters of the line's reopening, with uptake reaching five times the forecast figures and attributed to regeneration of the former steelworks area.
