Crawley Overview

Crawley is a rapidly growing town in West Sussex, England, having been first designated as a town in 1947. Urban bomb damage created a need for housing, and Crawley's location along London's green belt was deemed ideal. Crawley was originally required to provide housing for just 50,000 people, but now houses more than twice that number.

Employing 150,000 people, Crawley has exhibited some of the fastest growth in the UK. The Crawley Borough Council is accredited as a Living Wage Employer, which means that all workers, with the exception of apprentices, over the age of 18 will earn the UK living wage, which is updated annually. However, the cost of living in Crawley is higher than London and homes here are more than 10 times the average wage.

Crawley Job Opportunities

The largest industries and providers of jobs in Crawley are wholesale and retail, transportation, tourism, and engineering. Over a third of Crawley properties are office environments, while 18 percent are retail, 15 percent are warehouses, and 8 percent are factories. Transportation and communication account for 30 percent of employment in Crawley. Aviation is particularly prevalent here, with Gatwick Airport located at the edge of town. Major employers in the area include Air Partner, Boeing Training and Flight Services, First Choice, Virgin Holidays, Motorola, Philips, Siemens, and Varian Medical Systems.

Crawley Employment Trends

Crawley has exhibited strong growth for decades, and its economy shows no signs of weakening. Crawley has the third highest weekly earnings and second lowest level of inequality in the UK. Business growth in Crawley is expected to be extremely diverse. The town's Manor Royal Business District houses about 50 businesses and supports 30,000 jobs, and it, combined with convenient access to London Gatwick Airport, make Crawley a coveted spot for many big businesses.
