Bridport is a market town with a population of 14,500, located in the West Dorset AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The town lies about a mile from the sea and the World Heritage site of the Jurassic Coast. The nearby fishing harbour of West Bay is also situated within the town boundary. While the town dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, most of the main buildings are 18th century. Given its location and natural heritage, Bridport is a popular retirement town, with 1-bedroom flats costing in the vicinity of £70,000, and 2-bedroom cottages offered for as little as £160,000. Bridport has traditionally been known as a centre of the rope-making industry, and is also well known today for tourism and the arts. Several successful TV series, such as River Cottage and Broadchurch, have been filmed here.
Bridport Job Opportunities
Bridport is renowned for good food and drink; according to figures from Dorset County Council, employment opportunities exist in food production, tourist accommodation and distribution, while there are also jobs in Bridport in public administration, construction, finance and ICT. Rope and net making remain a key industry, with firms also manufacturing textiles for aerospace and defence, and sports nets for major events. Healthcare jobs, IT jobs, and finance jobs make up most of the service sector’s offering, but there are many retail jobs in Bridport that residents can easily secure as well. The town holds a twice-weekly market on the High Street, as well as a regular farmer’s market, and is also home to independent and national retailers, including Morrisons and Waitrose supermarkets. The town has a community hospital, a large comprehensive school, and several primary schools and pre-schools, so job prospects in health and education are promising.
Bridport Employment Trends
Figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show unemployment in Bridport at just 1%, lower than the rest of Dorset and the UK as a whole. The construction sector is on an upward trend at present, while agriculture and tourism continue to provide many Bridport jobs and seasonal employment opportunities. Bridport is home to a relatively high number of older people who choose to retire here, and this means that jobs in leisure, support services and healthcare are becoming increasingly important.
