Through 2016, Barnsley had a better year economically than was forecast. A greater number of new businesses than expected put down roots in the local economic area, creating nearly 1,400 new jobs in Barnsley, according to Barnsley’s economic development arm, Enterprising Barnsley. A recent uSwitch quality of life survey found that 70 percent of eligible adults were employed, with 45 percent of those working 35-45 hours a week, and 25 percent of those working longer hours. House prices throughout the area are below the national average, with flats selling for around £90,000 and semi-detached properties for under £120,000. A good selection of schools is available, from nursery through to 18 years, while Barnsley College and its university campus provide degree courses for those continuing an academic career.
