The Role

Based in our Global Centre in Manchester, you’ll join a collaborative and supportive pitch team, which supports lawyers from across Freshfields global offices. We advise on the strategic approach to winning new business in competitive situations and produce proposals and presentations. We offer a dynamic and fast paced environment and are often pitching to some of the world’s most exciting companies. We are an international law firm, so you will work with colleagues from across our global pitch team. We are looking for people who can build relationships with stakeholders remotely and have a passion for innovation and continuous improvement. This is an exciting role with opportunities to bring your ideas and skills to make a real difference to the growth of our global function.

Key Role Responsibilities

1. Delivering best-in-class pitches

  • Deliver best-in-class pitches, providing expert advice from start to finish, particularly focusing on strategic mandate and panel pitches
  • An expert bid writer, skilled at developing compelling pitches that are persuasive and differentiate Freshfields from our competitors
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with all members of the wider proposal community to deliver best in class pitches (e.g. lawyers, pitch team and MBD colleagues, pricing, design and other relevant teams)
  • Foster a joined-up approach with MBD colleagues, sector and client teams to ensure all proposals support our client strategy and priority focus areas

2. Promoting pitch best practice

  • Contribute to the coaching, training and development of all key stakeholders in the proposal process at Freshfields to improve their performance and win-rate
  • Proactively share knowledge and best practices on pitching across the global pitch teams and more widely across the business
  • Contribute to the development of more junior members of the global pitch team, including line management responsibility

3. Identifying new and innovative ways to differentiate

  • Proactively identify ways we can continue to innovate and further advance the firm’s approach to pitching.

4. Help drive forward continuous improvement in pitching

  • Participate in and take a lead role in selected key projects (e.g. pitch automation software, templates, experience management and collaboration tools)
  • Support continuous improvement in the firm’s approach to pitching by conducting post-pitch feedback reviews with clients and internal debriefs with proposal teams
  • Proactively collaborate with and contribute to the data and knowledge bases managed by the Global Proposals Content team

Key requirements

  • Degree educated - marketing qualifications ideal
  • Marketing and business development experience in a law firm or professional services context, with an emphasis on pitching
  • Experience of working in an international business environment that requires buy-in and engagement of senior management or partners, as well as working across cultures successfully
  • Experience of relationship management and winning new business
  • Proven track record of project management and delivering against objectives


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills – with a real focus on writing and competitive positioning. High attention to detail, creativity and accuracy.
  • High client empathy – demonstrates a deep understand of our what clients’ value
  • Able to build strong working relationships, to persuade and influence
  • Ability to lead a team to success in a high-pressure environment with a focus on results
  • Strong project management skills, with proven delivery
