Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Generation, monitoring and maintenance of department Key Performance Indicators in line with internal and external customer needs. Development and implementation of plans to achieve agreed targets
  • Ensure compliance against the company policies, procedures and product quality plans
  • Project management to deliver qualification of equipment to meet development and manufacturing requirements
  • Co-ordination of the selection, installation and commissioning of equipment to meet manufacturing and development requirements
  • Undertake appropriate activity to minimise scrap, increase yield, reduce manufacturing time and minimise manufacturing costs
  • Provision of timely feedback on Engineering trials and production data to Design, Development, Process, Yield and Production departments
  • Manage change control within department
  • Effective people management through the provision of coaching/mentoring and appropriate development planning to ensure the retention of key personnel
  • To ensure Engineers and Technicians are trained to the appropriate level to fulfil objectives
  • Prepare and control Capital and Operating budgets to maintain engineering capability to support manufacturing
  • Maintain focus on cost control for all engineering activities and proactively encourage cost reduction and lean manufacturing principles
  • Own equipment risk plans & co-ordinate methodology & ongoing review process for FMEA's
  • Manage equipment IT systems including the MES/Maximo/ERP interface
  • Identify new hardware requirements to meet the developing process/manufacturing needs. Ensure these requirements are addressed appropriately with regard to specifications, budget constraints, supplier identification and thorough evaluation. Develop testing strategy for conformance testing for all new hardware and ensure that all necessary risk assessments, documentation updates and appropriate training undertaken prior to release to production
  • Drive scrap reduction and yield improvement activities to realise capability of equipment performance. This will be achieved by the yield group identifying appropriate processes which needs to be addressed
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships across all departments to ensure improvement activities are carried through. Articulate through problem solving capability how variations in equipment conditions and calibration may affect product performance with regard to NPI and continuous improvement activity
  • Establish positive working relationships with equipment vendors to maintain best-known methods across the industry or tool set, improvement modifications and upgrades for obsolescence
  • Act as driver for identification and implementation of improvements to increase equipment uptime, mean time to repair, mean time between failure and reduce operating costs
  • Review individual and team performance against department KPI's and implement improvement plans
  • Ensure engineers are developed appropriately and in line with the needs of the business. Establish development plans that will encourage retention and deliver competent technical capability whilst striving for individual continuous development. Conduct effective Personal Development Reviews and monitor performance, accordingly, managing poor performance issues swiftly and effectively
  • Play a proactive role in the development of a positive health and safety and environmental culture to satisfy ISO45001 and ISO14001 requirements. Take responsibility for working practices within the department developing risk management for related activities

Education & Experience

  • Recognised engineering management experience of >5 years within a technical & high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Experienced in the management of equipment selection, commissioning and process set-up
  • Medium to long term projects co-ordination
  • Working to ISO9001/ISO14001/ISO45001 standards
  • Degree qualified in Electronic/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering

  • Knowledge & experience of best practice approach within high volume manufacturing industry
  • Lean manufacturing tools & techniques
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting guides, OCAPs, working documentation, safety
  • Knowledge of quality systems and reliability assessment
  • Organised and able to use standard manufacturing tools & techniques such as SPC, capability analysis, problem solving techniques and FMEA
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability. Appreciation of both practical and theoretical methodologies
  • Demonstrate creative approach to job related specific tasks
  • Ability to critically analyse technical drawings and manuals
  • Awareness of budget control
  • Knowledge of scientific experimentation techniques
  • Evidence for implementation of change control or working within such an environment at an influential level
