Which IT skills are in demand?
IT skills open the door to thousands of jobs and careers. But because there are so many skills to choose from, you need to be selective and see which ones will work best for you and match your ambitions.
If you're looking for your first job, making your move to a better position, or you want to move out of the sector you're in, these are the skills that will stand out on your CV and switch on employers.
The good news is that they're likely to remain in high demand for the foreseeable future too!
We all know you need to learn new skills as your career progresses – however, as a general tip, it's far better to acquire new skills before you apply for a new job or position. That way you're ready to do the job from day one – and your employer won't have to train you.
Similarly, if you're moving towards being a Senior Web Designer, you'll have to have Flash, Photoshop, Quark and InDesign on your CV.
Whether you're a designer or developer, when an employer wants to fill a position, the fact that you already have the required skills means you're ready to roll.
Remember, learning skills boosts your CV but it also says something about you – it shows that you're committed and proactive. Do as much research as you can by reading job descriptions and speaking to people who already do the job you want. Keep up with changes in the IT industry and try to get involved with them at the early stages. As with any new developments, you could get a head start as demand rises.
If you're already in a job, even if you're happy with it – take the time to ask your Boss what training schemes are in place, or what development policy they have. If it's not sufficient for your needs, you might want to consider enrolling on a night school course at your local college, Open University or an online training provider.
The BCS runs a number of professional certification qualifications for IT professionals at various stages of their careers; from new entrants to senior managers.
