How to Create a Retail CV
A retail CV does not need to differ in every way from any other sort, but it should be angled towards the demands of the industry. This means understanding and using some retail sector jargon as well as highlighting your particular area of expertise in the industry. When creating a retail CV:
- Use keywords. This is especially important for uploaded CVs. You might say 'retail buyer' or 'store manager' to describe your previous jobs rather than 'purchasing assistant' or 'management executive'.
- Name sectors. Your employment history might be all to do with retail, but the employers' names may not always be well known. Therefore list retail jobs by sub-sector - such as sports retail, fashion retail or grocery retail – as well as company name.
- Qualifications. The retail sector offers many ways to get qualified on the job and elsewhere, so highlight any diplomas like City and Guilds, Higher National Diplomas or foundation courses in retail before your school qualifications.
- Be skill specific. This means demonstrating your skill and experience with particular areas of retail such as customer service, supply chain management, retail law or e-commerce.
