A Recruiter’s CV Needs to Be the Best

While the essentials of a recruitment consultant CV are the same as for any other career, it should be the best when it comes to key elements like as formatting, length and tone of voice. While you know what a good candidate CV looks like, it’s sometimes valuable to get an outside perspective on what to include in your own application. Read on for our expert tips.

Drawing on Your Organisational Capabilities Is Crucial

Recruitment companies are extremely busy places to work. There are tight client deadlines, many different candidates to interview, update or stand down, not to mention the vast numbers of different positions and sectors to get your head around.

A successful recruitment consultant will have tested experience of organising their time and their responsibilities effectively, so that they can keep many plates spinning at the same time. Throughout your CV, you’ll want to use examples to demonstrate how you methodically approach your work and how you deal with pressure.

Examples do not need to exclusively come from the recruitment space, especially if you’re earlier on in your career. For instance, you may have begun your career as an Executive Assistant to a partner at an advertising agency, so an example could be, “Organised the constantly changing international schedule for a senior advertising executive, managing and replying to the executive’s correspondence and liaising with colleagues across the agency to action requests”.

Demonstrate That You Know How to Adhere to a Process

At every level of a recruitment business, from Administrator to Director-level, the ability to follow a clear process is critical to the smooth running of the business and successful candidate placements.

Recruitment is driven by defined processes for the benefit of both clients and candidates. Running these processes smoothly and simultaneously can be a tall order given you will have several different clients and even more candidates to move through at any one time. While you could draw on any ‘process-driven’ experience, we advise you lead with recruitment process examples to demonstrate your familiarity with the sector and the life-cycle of an appointment. Demonstrate knowledge of specific recruitment terminology in your examples—long list, short list, offer stage, stand down—as well as naming the recruitment database(s) you have experience using.

Always Highlight Your Knowledge of Specific Sectors and Disciplines

While you will be expected to quickly get up to speed with a new client’s sector and the specifics of the position for which they are recruiting, it’s important to demonstrate where you have existing knowledge and experience in recruitment, too.

For example, as a junior recruiter you may have worked as part of a team with one particular retail client on a raft of appointments, meaning you have a strong working knowledge of that kind of business and how it fits into the broader retail landscape.

Or, you may have previously worked as a researcher in an executive search company that specialised in finding senior finance professionals. Ensure you demonstrate your knowledge of the finance discipline through an example in your CV, e.g. ‘Lead researcher on over thirty multi-sector finance professional searches, ranging from Finance Manager to Finance Director to Chief Finance Officer’.

Use the Key Achievements Section to Reference Metrics and Results

Recruitment companies are performance driven environments, and individual and team results play a vital role in delivering a successful outcome for the client and the business itself. Any hiring manager will respond well to a CV that details key metrics and results as it shows you speak their language.

The best place to showcase your successes in this area is in the key achievements section. For example, you may have “Out-performed individual annual billings target by 33%”, “Secured £64,000 of new business from fresh leads”, or “Successfully placed over 60 candidates in retail roles over four months”. Whenever you can back-up your experiences with concrete facts, you improve your chances of being invited in for interview.
