Business Analyst CV Example and Tips

By Monster Contributor

Writing a business analyst CV can be especially complicated due to the many hats you have to wear in business analyst positions. In your career so far you’ve probably worked on a range of complex projects with multiple stakeholders, run projects, done requirements gathering and managed change. Turning this into a coherent summary can be pretty challenging.

Business analysts are skilled communicators, able to translate technical information for non-technical colleagues. Use these skills in your CV too: make sure you explain the benefits of what you’ve done in concrete terms – avoid the temptation to simply list project size and technology used as it’ll be difficult for many non-experts to understand.

We’ll look at some more tips below to help grab the attention of hiring managers. You can download our business analyst CV sample below, too, and also check out our CV tips.

How to Write a Business Analyst CV

When you’re writing your CV for your next job opportunity, bear the following tips in mind to ensure yours is the one that catches the reader’s eye.

Focus on the Benefits

No business analyst job is the same – one week you’ll be making recommendations to the CEO, the next you’ll be co-ordinating software programmers, and after that you could be explaining to employees how your new software works for them. You’ll undoubtedly have many different responsibilities and duties to list – yet you don’t want to crowd out your CV.

So, our advice is to focus on the benefits of everything you did at the company, and show how your analytical, strategic approach achieved certain goals. Perhaps you led the deployment of a new intranet. It’s a good idea to go into detail about the benefits of what you did. Maybe one of your responsibilities was to manage change. Don’t just write “Managed Change” – instead, explain how “I produced documents and posters which helped colleagues understand why we were changing their intranet platform”.

Highlight Achievements

On a similar note, your CV should highlight the key achievements you had in particular roles. Hiring managers are looking for evidence that you can really deliver.

Say you consulted on a project that involved customising a SQL database for your customer’s needs. The key is to provide key evidence of the achievements – perhaps explaining that it increased productivity at the company by 20%, or that adoption of the product rose across the business.

Show Off Your Sector-Specific Knowledge

As you progress through your career, you’ll pick up a lot of technical skills and know-how. This should certainly be noted in your CV. In addition, any further training courses you’ve completed in things like change management or project management should all be included. This will show hiring managers that you are up to date with the latest trends and can bring best practices to the role.

Mention Your Soft Skills Too

A successful business analyst needs much more than a knowledge of technology and how it maps to business activities. Instead, the most valuable skills are those ‘people skills’, such as communication, a clear writing style, the ability to sell a concept and a friendly disposition that makes people feel they can approach you.

A Personal Statement That Tells a Story

Last of all, you should certainly include a personal statement at the top of your CV that outlines your career so far, your motivation and ambitions. It should grab the reader’s attention by demonstrating why you want this job, and why you’re the right person for it.

Perhaps you’ve mainly worked for systems integrators but are now keen to work in-house at a blue chip. Your personal statement should explain this change in direction in your career – something like: “I am now enthusiastic to work in-house where I can see the longer-term impact of my work…”
