The promotion to manager is an exciting step up, but the additional responsibility that comes with a senior role can feel like a huge leap for many new managers who are uncertain how to effectively lead their team.So how can new managers be great leaders who deliver business results while maintaining the respect of their team?
Make time for your team
Team members need to feel valued and that their opinions are important. It’s, therefore, vital managers make time for their team. If you give other employees the impression you’re too busy to be bothered by them, not only will they feel unimportant, which could result in poor performance, but they will avoid coming to you with issues, meaning problems could easily escalate into crises before you are made aware of them.
It’s a good idea to schedule a 30 minute catch-up with line reports on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and don’t be tempted to skip these when you’re busy – staff are as big a priority as clients or customers as without them there wouldn’t be a business.
Communication is key
One of the biggest divisions that occurs in teams is when staff believe management are keeping them in the dark about important business decisions and not consulting them on company changes. Of course there will always be issues that need to be discussed within the management team first, but you should aim to be as open and honest with staff as possible. Otherwise team resentments can build and working relationships become strained.
Be firm but fair
This is undoubtedly the right approach to management but one that many managers – particularly those that are new to the job – struggle with. There is a fine line between being too hard and too soft on staff and either will lose you respect from the people you work with. New managers must set clear expectations for employees to follow. If a staff member falls short of these then you need to be firm in addressing their poor performance, explain the changes you need to see, and give them a chance to turn things around.
The art of delegation does not always come easily to new managers. While it’s important not to delegate too much, many new managers also find it tricky to delegate enough. Delegating does take time and it may seem senseless to spend time explaining a task to another member of staff when you could just as easily do it yourself. However, it’s important that staff feel trusted by you to take on new work – it’s the only way they will learn and grow. Effective delegation also means you free up your time to focus on the critical work you need to be responsible for. Failure to do this will see you trying to manage too much and work will slip as a result.
Lead by example
Staff will quickly lose respect for managers who do not adhere to the examples they set. Coming into the office late, leaving early and missing deadlines are all good examples of how not to behave as a manager. The best way to motivate a team is by being a trustworthy, hands-on manager, who’s not afraid to step in and get their hands dirty when the team need support. To inspire other employees and create a can-do culture, you must walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
Good leadership requires a commitment to all of these steps. For new managers the step up may seem like a big shift in the way you work, but these are simple approaches to management that will ensure you command the respect of staff and consequently drive the best results for the business.
